We know that complex journeys can be stressful, and anxiety can surge every time you need to change services in an unfamiliar rail or bus station. Research from the NHS and disability charities shows that there are up to 10 million people in the UK who lack the confidence or ability to travel by rail due to anxiety or hidden disabilities such as dementia or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Here at Journey Alerts, we knew this was something we could help with so we came up with a brand new accessible approach to our real-time journey information. We avoid stressful information overload by only delivering simple instructions about what you need to do on your journey right now and what to do next.
The step-by-step guidance is delivered via WhatsApp, Messenger or SMS, removing the need for any travel apps, and responds in real time to live conditions such as missed stops, platform changes or delays. It can help you get round those particularly stressful interchanges by combining the instructions with very simplistic visual maps of the station – no complicated map-reading abilities needed.
We think it’s a game changer which will safely open up the public transport experience for millions who fear missing their stop, worry about getting disorientated or struggle to absorb long streams of journey information. The new system is currently being trialled with our partner East Midlands Railway, but we’ll be rolling it out nationally in the coming weeks. Watch this space!
